Granddaddy purple strain

What is Granddaddy Purple?

Granddaddy Purple strain is a famous indica-dominant strain, developed by Ken Estes in 2003. It’s a crossing of Purple Urkle and Big Bud that strikingly combines the best of both parents. The Purple Urkle descent accounts for its deep purple colour and a fruity aroma of grapes and berries. The oversized buds and massive yields it produces – up to 1200 grams/42 ounce per m2 when cultivated outdoors – are clearly inherited from its Big Bud parent.

Granddaddy Purple is an indica-dominant hybrid with a sativa/indica ratio of 30:70. Its CBD-content lies around 1%, while THC-levels range from 17-27%.

Where can you use Granddaddy Purple for?

Granddaddy Purple was developed for medical purposes, more specifically to improve sleep and alleviate pain. The strain is also effective in treating appetite loss, stress, depression, anxiety and muscle spasms.

Recreationally, Granddaddy Purple is mainly used to relax and unwind after a long day of work. It will make you peaceful, content and slightly lethargic. Granddaddy Purple stimulates introspection, so it works well for some quiet reflection on your own. At social occasions it may not be the best choice. When you suffer from (minor) physical inconveniences this strain will have a soothing effect. Because of its sleep inducing effect this strain is mainly recommended for evening use.

As a classic indica-dominant strain, Granddaddy Purple has a numbing effect on the body. It is very potent and not made for first-time users. Even for experienced users just a few tokes are often enough. Couch lock is very possible. While you are physically relaxed and pain-free, your mind will drift away in cheerful reveries. Racing thoughts will quiet down. The euphoria is mainly cerebral, while the calmness Granddaddy Purple provides is detectable in both body and mind. Granddaddy Purple has a strong appetite-increasing effect, which makes it a good strain for people who suffer from a lack of appetite. This strain will likely cause the muchies.

What makes Granddaddy Purple unique?

Next to relatively high CBD and THC levels, Granddaddy Purple also contains the cannabinoid cannabigerol (CBG): about 0.16 – 0.8 %. CBG is a neuroprotectant that contributes to the overall beneficial effects of this strain on a lot of medical conditions.

Granddaddy Purple is often confused with another famous purple strain, namely Grape Ape. Both strains are almost identical in looks, taste and effect. Only the scent of Granddaddy Purple is slightly more berry-like, with hints of marshmallow. Because they are difficult to distinguish, some people suggested they are actually one and the same strain. Another possibility is that they are often mixed up by cannabis cultivators and consumers alike.
